Depending on how you plan to use your Wacom tablet, you might not need professional or expensive software. Some of the more basic Wacom models come with some software already, but the Bamboo Touch doesn’t include any software.

Wacom Inkling Offers New Way to Draw Digitally

I am quite amazed by the new digital drawing tool from Wacom called the Inkling.

It is a pen and receiver that can attach to any piece of paper, sketchbook or whatever drawing surface you prefer and the receiver tracks your pen strokes. Inkling will save up to 50 drawings and you can create new layers easily. When you are done, you upload the drawings by USB using Wacom’s Sketch Manager software which will allow you to save the file to the format you want.

It will be available this September for $199. That’s not a bad price considering how portable it is and what it can do!

Since nothing is perfect, there are some cons:
It only uses ball-point nibs.
You are limited to only using A4 size paper which is slightly larger than U.S. letter size.
It requires line-of-sight between pen and receiver while drawing.
You can’t erase mistakes.

I don’t view these as very big cons. I would still buy one even though I have a Wacom tablet because it seems more portable. For quick sketches on the go, this is a great buy. Especially if you don’t need or want something like an iPad.

It was created by Joystickers, two engineers who say their purpose is simple, “to make awesome stuff”. I can get behind that.
They also created a Scribe and The Classics which are arcade buttons for your smart phone or tablet. I’m looking forward to their next invention!

Wacom Digitizer Used In Cregle PenBook

This Cregle PenBook has hit the FCC website and I’m very interested in the fact that it is a Windows 7 machine with a Wacom digitizer. It looks kind of clunky and I wonder if that will change (I hope so), but it has some great features.

The PenBook features a multitouch display with palm-rejection technology so you can place your hand on the screen and use the pen to write.
There are touch-sensitive bars above and below the screen which you can use for gestures to adjust screen brightness, trigger Page Up or Down actions, or send a Ctrl+Alt+Del signal. You can also create custom gesture-based commands.
The tablet has a 5000mAh, 6 hour battery which is user replaceable.

I think the PenBook might give the portable Wacom, Apple iPad and other touchscreen devicesÂ a run for their money. We shall see! No word on when it will be released or how much it will cost yet. Check out some of the (unflattering) pictures below!

Why Buy Wacom Intuos4?

Reasons for buying a Wacom Intuos4 tablet over other brands.

There are some less expensive options when buying a drawing tablet and I researched them before deciding to purchase the Wacom Intuos4. My #1 reason for buying Wacom is quality. Wacom is a trustworthy company and known for their high quality products. The second reason is their great customer service. I called them before ordering my tablet from Amazon to see how they respond and they were excellent. They answered all of my questions without any negativity and helped me decide which tablet to buy.

Another reason to strongly consider a Wacom Intuos4 are the multiple sizes available. This is important because you are able to get the size you need to fit your work space without losing any power and usability. Each Intuos4 comes with the same software, pens and design. Sizes include extra large, large, medium, small or wireless. I know wireless isn’t a size, but I include it because it is a different size than the other tablets.

The software that is included with each Intuos4 is what I consider to be really good software. You will get NikÂ® Color Efex Proâ„¢ WE6, Wacom Brushes 3.0 and you can pick two out of the following: Adobe PhotoshopÂ® Elements 8 for PC and Mac, Autodesk SketchBook ExpressÂ® 2010 and Corel Painterâ„¢ Sketch Pad. Granted, Wacom is assuming you already have Adobe PhotoshopÂ® which is necessary for NikÂ® Color Efex Proâ„¢. I think this is an acceptable assumption since most people using an Intuos4 are generally professional designers. I would choose PhotoshopÂ® Elements 8 and Corel Painter Sketch Pad out of the three available options. While I have nothing against Autodesk SketchBook ExpressÂ®, I just don’t feel it is worth it if you don’t already have the other two programs.

Bamboo Stylus for Apple iPad

Now the Bamboo stylus is designed for the iPad!

I really like the stylus for the Bamboo models and especially now that there is one created to be compatible with the Apple iPad. There are even applications made specifically for the iPad:

wacom bamboo stylus photo The Bamboo stylus is a sleek and simple design. It feels very natural – like holding a pen or pencil. It is also compatible with the iPhone4 and has limited support for the first generation Samsung Galaxy Tab. And there are plans to make the Bamboo stylus for the iPad compatible with other touch screen devices in the future.

The tip of the stylus is 25% narrower in diameter than other graphic tablet pens (6mm versus 8mm). This made it easier for me to make precise and finer lines than other graphic tablet pens. I especially noticed a difference with my handwriting.

Like all Wacom tablets, it takes a little time to adjust to using a pen on a graphics tablet, but once you do, you won’t be able to tell you aren’t writing on paper.

I’m excited about this new Bamboo/iPad pen! No more finger marks on my iPad/ iPhone4 and it will be much easier to take notes and sketch on the fly.

Are Wacom tablets useful for Photographers?

Some say yes and some say no. I am not a professional photographer, but I do find it handy to have a Wacom tablet when I want to retouch my photos. I remember using a mouse to edit, draw and paint in Photoshop and Corel, and I do not miss it!

The reasons for using a pen tablet are simple. The interface makes painting and drawing so much easier and faster. A pen is more natural and comfortable than a mouse. You’ll get less hand cramps! The pen has an eraser and side buttons which can be customised to deliver keystrokes, mouse actions and many other actions.

Thanks to the light-weight tablet, it’s very portable and can be set on your lap. With the accurate pressure sensitivity, you can make broad, calligraphic or detailed strokes and other cool effects. It can be awkward to switch between using a keyboard and tablet so Wacom makes it easier on you with buttons and a radial menu that is customizable.

There are other tablet makers out there, but I prefer and highly recommend Wacom. I’ve tried other tablets in the past and was never fully satisfied. I feel like I wasted money when I should have just waited and saved up for a Wacom. The pressure sensitivity in the battery-free pens is the best I have ever used. I also believe Wacom stands apart because their tablets are extremely well-made.Â The wide range of tablet options, sizes and features also make Wacom tablets stand above the rest.

Overall, I believe anyone who works with image editing, painting or illustration software should strongly consider a Wacom tablet.
